Alabama won't have the luxury of playing at home this weekend as it travels to Nashville to take on the 2-2 Vanderbilt Commodores. This isn't the prototypical Vandy squad, as this team has shown some grit with an opening weekend victory over Virginia Tech and an overtime loss at No. 9 Missouri.

The last time Vanderbilt beat Alabama in football was 1984, with the final score being 30-21. They were led by head coach George MacIntyre while Bama was led by Ray Perkins. Bama entered the game 1-2 with losses to Boston College and Georgia Tech. Vandy entered the game 3-0 with wins over Kansas State, Maryland and Kansas.

But Vanderbilt knows where the real problem lies: penalties. The 2023 Commodores were 24th in the country with 42.5 penalty yards per game. This year, that number has almost doubled to 83.3 yards per game, ranked 124th of 134 teams in FBS. Alabama, too, is near the bottom of that leaderboard with 77.3 penalty yards per game, which is 120th.
